Choice of roof tiles
In many cases it is appropriate to replace the old half-round tiles (canal) with modern pantiles (double interlocking roman) to ensure the maximum durability and lowest maintenance. These solutions will include the possibility of using tiles with a form and variable colour which are visually very close to traditional roofing. For the purists, there is also the option of new half-round tiles which have stops to prevent slipping. However this is often more expensive as there are more tiles to lay per square metre.
One also sees the flat "Marseille" tiles in this area, and the choice is then whether to replace with the same or go over to a pantile solution. It's worth noting that the modern Marseille tiles are a different format to the old ones, so any repairs on an existing roof are limited to finding a dwindling stock of second hand tiles...
Some properties will have seen re-roofed in the past with cement/concrete tiles, which often jar with the style of the property. Again, the terracotta pantile solution is recommended.

Roof construction techniques
The underlying roof structure in an older house will require careful examination before re-roofing to ensure that the are no structural defects or insect attack. Any re-roofing must always be on a sound base.
Roof construction in the Vendee and surrounding areas often uses close boarding under the tiles, either on the rafters or directly spanning the purlins. The existing boarding has a long lifespan and can often be retained, but if it's in poor condition, it is essential to replace it. This is particularly the case if the roof shows signs of long-term sagging, which in many cases can be corrected with the new boarding.
Any old battening on the roof is always replaced as these small section timbers have a limited life-span. In addition, a membrane is added which is now current practice.
Whilst we can offer the traditional mortered ridge and eves, it is usually better to opt for the modern dry-ridge techniques which are more durable, at a lower cost and allow easy intervention in the future.

In instances where the roof structure is beyond saving we can rebuild it completely. This will include stabilising and leveling the wall tops, new A-frames or other structural members, rafters and boarding. Top grade treated timber is always used.
